How to Properly Maintain Your Garage Door

Maintaining your garage door is like any other maintenance task that you have around your home. It’s important because it provides safety and curb appeal for the rest of your home. Here are some of the things that you need to do in order to properly maintain your garage door.

Inspect Your Hardware

Hardware includes all of the screws and handles that allow your garage door to continue functioning in the manner that it was designed for. Screws can become loose or rusted with time. Performing annual inspections will ensure that you can tackle these issues before they can become a serious problem. Replace or tighten your hardware so that your garage doorcan continue to function safely. For more exposed hardware, you may want to consider replacing it with something that won’t corrode.

Examine Your Track

The track of your garage door is what allows it to open and close. It’s important that you keep it maintained so that your garage door doesn’t fall off of it and injure someone. You may need to lubricate the chain occasionally so that your garage door can operate more freely and be squeak free. Another thing that you’ll need to examine is if the track is still in proper alignment with your garage door.

Check for Safety

Most people use automatic garage door openers because of the convenience. This means that you need to be on top of maintenance in order to prevent any injuries from occurring. For example, make sure that the reflectors that detect movement and will stop the motion of the garage door are in good working order. Keeping them aligned and cleaning them on a regular basis may help you to ensure your family’s safety in the garage.

Touchup as Needed

The outside of your garage door is just as important as the mechanical components on the interior. Addressing any issues with wear and tear will help your garage door to last for a longer amount of time. Touching up the paint or dealing with any damage that may have occurred are a part of this process. Your garage door provides a great deal of curb appeal to your home and having it lacking in this department can bring down the appearance of the rest of your home.

Addressing garage door maintenance issues as they arise will help you to keep it functional and safe for your family. Use these tips so that you properly maintain your garage door year after year.
