Tips To Improve Indoor Air Quality

Air quality in your home is important to the comfort, safety, and health of you and your family. All Climate is here to help you improve the level of air quality in your home. Below they have provided some tips and tricks on how to improve the air quality in your home.

Minimize Chemical Pollutants

You can improve your indoor air quality by minimizing your use of chemical pollutants. There are several ways in which you can do this. If you are a smoker, consider only smoking outdoors. Tobacco smoke can contain numerous indoor pollutants at high concentrations that can be hazardous to air quality. You might also consider replacing your harsh cleaners or cleaners with strong fragrances.

There are several products that have been third-party certified and labeled by reputable organizations such as GREENGUARD and Green Seal. Products with these labels are sure to be safe for your home and air quality. There are also activities that produce more pollution such as painting, soldering, sanding, polishing, etc.

These activities are best performed outside or in well ventilated areas of the home. You can also reduce air pollutants by controlling the exhaust amounts emitted from appliances and cars. Make sure not to idle your car or other engines in the garage in order to reduce the risk of air pollution.

Keep It Clean

Another way to improve your air quality is to keep your house as clean as possible. Some simple ways to do this are to removing your shoes at the door in order to decrease the amount of dirt and dust that is tracked throughout the house after being outdoors. This can also be helped by placing mats at each entrance to your home so that shoes can be wiped off.

There is also machine washable bedding that allows you to wash sheets, pillows, comforters, etc. at least once a week to reduce the exposure to allergens and dust mites. Also, using high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum cleaners with disposable bags and microfiber cloths help with dust removal.

Control Moisture

Controlling the moisture in your home also helps to improve the air quality. You can do this by repairing all leaks in your home that might be allowing excess air or moisture into the home. You can also run bathroom exhaust fans while showering, or place plants throughout your home. House plants can be used to filter carbon dioxide. It is important to keep your home as dry as possible and to control the humidity level to less than 60%.

If a humidifier needs to be utilized to reach this level, be sure to clean the humidifier often. If your home has experienced flood or water damage, it is important that immediate action is taken to remove the water and wet materials. All of the wet materials need to be dried within 48 hours in order to prevent mold growth.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Ensuring proper ventilation also helps to improve air quality in your home. You can do this by opening doors and windows when the temperature allows, making sure that mechanical air filters are being used and changing them periodically.   Be sure that all fuel burning furnaces, fireplaces, heaters, etc. are being vented to the outside and are not located near windows, heating, or air conditioning systems.

You should also consider using home mechanical air systems that have good filtration systems that can control dust levels. These mechanical systems can include electrostatic systems or ion generators. If you do decide to use these, be sure they are certified for minimal ozone release.
